What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox (a well known brand of botulinum toxin) is a drug that weakens or paralyses muscle. In small doses, it can reduce skin wrinkles and help treat some muscle conditions.
How long will it last?
The effects from Botulinum toxin will last three to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and need to be treated again. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are shrinking.
Who is suitable for this kind of treatment?
You must be over the age of 18 to have any injectable treatments, if you look younger than 21 you will be asked for ID.
Botox injections are not recommended if:
- You have a neuromuscular condition like myasthenia gravis
- You're taking certain medicines
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding
Is there any down time?
Whilst you can usually get back to your normal activities straight away, we recommend avoiding alcohol, smoking and vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours. It is completely normal to experience some redness, bruising, very mild bleeding, swelling and tenderness after the procedure for 2 - 3 days.
